Playroom Organization

by Courtney El-Ghoul February 29, 2020
The Unicorn obsession is so real in our house.

Okay, so while I was all gung-ho-let’s-get-this-party-started with my storage room makeover, I also started to look in the girls’ playroom. Instantly I was like… Holy Cow, these girls have way too much stuff. They are twins so they already have two of everything then add in a super over-the-top grandmother who must think our playroom is like 6000 square feet or something, haha. Seriously, my mom buys them way too many toys. Soooo ding ding ding! Another room that Carly from the Evergreen Method could help me tackle. I told Carly I would like to knock out the girls’ playroom right after we finished the storage area- I could not wait any longer.

I can’t tell you what a great feeling it was to have this all done. Seriously, taking the time to declutter, and let go of things that I knew the girls weren’t playing with or had outgrown was almost therapeutic. At the same time, it was a little sad, more for Khalil… if you can believe it!? I think he had a more difficult time saying goodbye to certain toys than even the girls did! Haha, poor guy, his babies are growing up! I mean it was sad for me too, but that’s life, they do grow up, right!? The way we saw it was that we were not going to throw the toys in the trash. The plan is always to donate. So, to help the girls (and us) feel better about the cleanout we reminded them that the longer we held on to the unused toys the longer it will be before they go into the hands of a child who may not have as much, and who would love and use them. This did the trick and helped speed the process up with the girls.

Kidkraft Retro Kitchen used DAILY

Here is how we got it done:

I sat with the girls and let them know that Ms. Carly was going to come over in a few days to help mommy organize their playroom. I explained to the girls that we need to go through their toys together and take the ones they don’t play with anymore to some other little boys/girls who don’t have as much. As you can imagine there were some tears, and some sneaky grabbing things back out of the donated pile when I wasn’t looking 😉 Overall it wasn’t that bad, the girls like the idea of donating to other little kids so this helped. We ended up with a pretty decent amount of toys/stuffed animals that we were able to take to Goodwill. I thought maybe they would ask for certain things once they realized they were gone, but nope… they have been fine.

Yes .. there is a whole bin for jewelry and kids tattoos, ha.

Now for the organization part. Carly and I came up with a plan to stay within budget by using the same storage system and bins that I already had but just adding in a few more. We moved their play kitchen into this little playhouse that they never even used before! Genius idea by Carly! It’s amazing how just a little rearranging of the room can make it so much better. Now, it makes more sense, and they have designated spaces for certain activities. Like – here is the arts/crafts area, here is the kitchen, here is an active play area, and so on. You get the idea. She also got these cute little food containers that are perfect for storing all their markers/art materials. All of the bins are clearly labeled and it looks ten times more inviting. I feel like because the girls had so many toys before, it was a little overwhelming for them. Ever since we finished this room I am finding that they are playing together longer and they seem less distracted. Unexpected bonus results, but we couldn’t be happier with the outcome.

We love Green Toys – they only use recycled plastic and they are so cute.

I have said it before and I will say it again… if you are local to the Northern Virginia/DC area, hit up Carly at the Evergreen Method. She will even give TwinLatte followers 10% off your first booking! Drop the code TWINLATTE10 in your message to her to redeem!

Do your kiddos have too much stuff? How often do you find you need to do a big cleanout?

Getting Organized – Storage Room

by Courtney El-Ghoul February 21, 2020

Okay, so in my recent Party Planning post, I mentioned that whenever I am hosting an event or party at my house, it always inspires me to get more organized. Deciding to host a “Galentine’s Day” for all the moms at the girls’ school, was no different. It was just the motivation I needed to get moving on our Storage Room! If you walked in my basement on February 1st, you would surely have thought it was still Christmas time!!! You could say that I got a little carried away with buying extra Christmas decorations this year. You could also say that this is the understatement of the year. I am not even kidding. I know, no one here is shocked. The problem with turning our home into a beautiful winter wonderland was that I ran out of places to put everything once we took it all down. Everything, including the extra tree that I purchased, was ALL OVER the basement. I know, I know. No one needs a tree in every room.

Anyway, to say I was overwhelmed would’ve been putting it very lightly. I knew we were having this party, and that I would be so embarrassed if someone went down in the basement, plus it just needed to be done. Of course, I had to call in my girl, Carly, at The Evergreen Method to help me contain the Christmas bomb that had gone off in my basement.

For starters, I sent her pictures of the disaster zone, and then we talked through my vision. Ideally, I wanted to keep the same shelving system we already had in place but thought maybe we could add some storage bins. Pinterest came in handy while I was getting together ideas for the look I was going for. When discussing the budget, Carly was great at being flexible with balancing the use of things we already had and only buying what we truly needed.

Guys!!! Look at this…

How chic are these bins?!

We ended up using black storage bins that are all clearly labeled and simple metal shelving. I loved when Carly suggested using the opaque black, to me it is more aesthetically pleasing than some of the clear alternatives. Everything is easy to find now. I can just grab what I need and move on. Christmas Decorations now have their own designated space. which in and of itself is extra as heck… but, oh well. I love it. I even organized all of the girls’ artwork from school and set it aside because Carly gave me a great idea to use Artkive which is so cool! Check it out if you haven’t already! There are so many cool ideas for hanging on to the littles artwork and being able to store those special memories. Before this I had it thrown all over the place. Now, I can keep all of the memories but maybe we won’t have to add an addition to store it all forever, ha

All the artwork is in a tidy pile and ready to be hung or digitized!
  • The Christmas Corner

Initially, we had planned on having a small workout area in that room, as well as using it for storage. Up until now, it has been so chaotic that there was no way we could have even imagined making it a multi-purpose room. Now, I can walk around and visually map out where I could see us putting up a ballet bar, having some lightweights, and a place for a yoga mat. Maybe we will even be able to use the treadmill that has just been sitting there collecting dust and holding garland all this time! The space was so uninviting before, and now it has a purpose! Ahhhh. I am so happy!

I used to hate going down to the basement because it would give me crazy anxiety. Every time something didn’t have an official home, we would just throw in this room. Eventually, it just became a purgatory for stuff that had no real set place. You guys know I love the Holidays and that I can be a bit extra myself, so you can imagine the mess we had on our hands. Not any more! What else can I say? I LOVE my storage room now!

Next on the list! Girls playroom! Stay tuned for this one!

If you are local and require any organization but don’t quite know where to begin, Carly is your girl! She is the best!

How is your storage zone? Are you like me and keep adding more and more things to put away?

Pantry Declutter- Part 3 of Home Organizing

by Courtney El-Ghoul November 18, 2019

If you guys have been following along with me, you know I have been obsessed, to say the least, with organizing our home. I showed you guys my closet and our mudroom which I am beyond happy with! For real, it has been life-changing! And, I am proud to report – we have been maintaining the organization!!!

Pantry Organization

After
After:)

The next big project was our pantry. Ugh. I was dreading this one.

Okay, we all know the kitchen is the most used room in most houses. It’s important. For us, it is without a doubt the most used room… by a landslide. We spend most of our time as a family in this room. We are always eating, chatting, hanging out, cooking, and baking. We are super lucky that we have a large pantry. Unfortunately, we were not using it to the full extent of its potential. I was driving myself nuts trying to find things when I was cooking dinner, packing lunches, or baking with the girls. I couldn’t even ask the girls to grab something for me because everything was either impossible for them to find or reach. This area really needed some super intentional and well thought out TLC.

Before-Total Disaster
Before

If you’ve read the other two home organization posts, this next step will be no surprise. Obviously, I called Carly, from TheEvergreenMethod. If you are local to the Northern Virginia area – I swear – she is the BEST. If you are not, I am so sorry, ha. For real though, considering hiring someone close to where you live. Working with a professional is such a good investment.

Clear bins for Holiday Items

Getting Started With The Pantry Organization Process

To get going, Carly and I sat down for a discussion. She asked me how I start and finish my day in reference to the things I use in the pantry, along with several other interesting questions. This was super helpful, as we organized items starting with breakfast, lunch/snacks, followed by dinner. Very quickly – everything had its place and was clearly labeled. It makes my mornings so much smoother, I can grab my breakfast items, and in the meantime begin gathering the things I need to pack lunches. Imagine an assembly line, in your pantry. 🙂 Even the girls can now recognize where things are, so they can be more independent, and help me if I need them to grab something.

Labels make all the difference
Breakfast Items all together:)

Aside from being invaluable for my sanity organization wise… there are other more serious benefits. With Nahla now being Gluten Free and Dairy Free, you can imagine the chaos that was going on – the risk of a snack mix up was always looming. I didn’t have things separated and really only I knew where to find specific items. Now we have bins for all my GF/DF baking items, snacks, pasta, and it’s all labeled! Ahhhh so much better!

I have talked about my love/hate relationship with The Container Store before, and it still stands. Haha. My hate only really stems from the times where I don’t know what I need and the number of options is too overwhelming for me. But for this project – The Container Store stole the show. Everything we used was so good! I thought I would mention a couple of my favorite purchases.

Favorite Organization Purchases

  • The lazy susans are the best! I love them in the pantry – no more showing and spilling things to get what’s in the back. One spin and you can see it all.
  • The cereal containers, (particularly if you are a cereal family like us) are a game-changer. We have so many different kinds, and I hate stale cereal!
  • Lastly the home edit 3 tier shelf is amazing for organizing and being able to see all your canned items. I don’t know about you but I hate the wasted space of a 12″ tall shelf holding only 3″ cans that keep getting lost. Ugh. Solution found. Thank goodness.

The icing on the cake for me was finally having my Holiday items completely organized. Oh my gosh, I didn’t even know that I needed this – and now I wonder how I ever lived with the chaos of before. I am so mad at myself for not thinking of, and doing this before! I tend to go a little overboard with, well let’s face it … every Holiday 🙂 I have baking/plates/tablecloths/napkins for Christmas, Valentines, Halloween, Easter, and anything else you can think of! Well, now, everything has a clear bin and is labeled. If it’s Valentine’s Day… I just find the bin that says “Valentine’s Day” and everything I need is inside! It’s a miracle, really. Oh, and we decluttered and got rid of so much junk that I am not even sure why I still had! It’s amazing how quickly you can accumulate so many unnecessary things. Suddenly you’re like, um… why do I have 27 extra Tupperware lids, but no Tupperware?!

Anyway, I will share with you guys before/after pics so you can see the transformation!

I’ve said it before and I will say it again, if you are local hit up Carly, she rocks! If a home organizer is not in the budget you can also totally do this on your own. With a trip to the container store, a label maker, a positive mindset, and a bit of patience you can totally get in there to declutter and get organized. You will not regret it.

Getting Organized- Part 2 Mudroom

by Courtney El-Ghoul November 1, 2019

I shared with you guys my closet organizing by The Evergreen Method, which by the way I am still obsessed with. I can’t tell you guys how much easier it is for me to find things and how happy I am with the makeover. The next room in our home that needed a functional facelift, was our mudroom.

Organizing The Mud Room

This room is important not only for me to feel organized and sane, but it was also an opportunity to start including the girls in the process of getting and staying organized. Because the whole family uses this space an equal amount, we are trying to lead by example and encourage the twins to be more aware of where things should go when they get home. I want them to understand the importance of putting things back where they belong starting at a young age, as I feel it’s so important to get into good habits now, and then it will be automatic for them as they get older. My mom always made me make my bed every morning, no matter what. I did it so much that to this day, I just don’t feel right if it’s not done. If I were to leave my bed disheveled and unmade – it would really throw off my whole day. I have already started having the girls help me make their beds in the morning, and it’s not always something they want to do, but they are getting better about it. I tell them it’s just like brushing your teeth, you can’t leave home without doing it!

Before, Yikes!
After

Okay, but the mudroom, was not getting as much attention… and that is being generous, ha. I was slacking on it, end of story. There were things thrown everywhere with no rhyme or reason, it was chaos! The girls would just throw their shoes or jackets wherever because I didn’t have a designated space for them, so I couldn’t enforce a rule that didn’t exist. The lack of structure left it so I was left with no choice but to constantly be pick everything up so at least to the unknown eye it looked somewhat decent… but really, it was a total pigpen. Again, I didn’t want to spend a ton of money at the container store on new stuff so Carly came up with a plan to use things we already had elsewhere in the house. Oh my gosh, another game changer! Just labeling the bins alone, made such a huge difference. We got rid of all the clutter in the coat closet, and added an old basket I already had for dirty laundry. This might be my favorite part! The dirty socks covered in sand and god knows what drove me nuts. Now the girls just throw them in the basket all by themselves, and I don’t have to deal with cleaning up the trail of sand all through the house!! They know what bins to put what shoes in (IE ballet, boots, school shoes), and where to hang their coats and bookbags. We have a system now when they come home from school, it’s so nice. Ava, in particular, is so into it, which surprised me as she is usually the more unorganized of the two. She will even put Nahla’s stuff away without me asking! If she sees something out of place, she will let me know! It’s so cute! Who knows, maybe she will be one of those super organized, everything labeled types as an adult. I would love that!

We have a space for keys, mail, winter stuff, you name it has its own space. Oh, and Khalil and I have our separate bins for shoes. The girls will sometimes put mine away for me, ha. So yes, it’s nice to be getting the whole house organized. But, more than anything I am loving the process of getting the kids involved, and having them be apart of it. Carly is so wonderful, so if you are local you should totally hit her up! Next stop Pantry! Stay tuned for that post soon.

What about you guys? Do you have your kids help with staying organized?

Getting Organized

by Courtney El-Ghoul September 30, 2019

Today I want to talk about getting organized! AHHHH isn’t it the best feeling in the world!? I mean I feel like we all love the idea. Getting there can feel so daunting. But, if we are being honest, the hard part is maintaining it. I like to consider myself a pretty organized person, in general. However, when I start looking around my kitchen and the “junk drawer” looks like a bomb went off… I am like, okay, I have a problem! Haha. Truthfully, I am not that bad. But, ever since I had the twins I feel like things have gotten a little out of hand. Kids accumulate so much stuff! Then when I see things getting a little haywire, it’s easy for me to use the excuse that I am so busy with them that I just don’t have time to get organized. Which is entirely untrue – but it is not a great excuse.

Before
After

True story, when we moved into our new house about a year ago I told Khalil “we are decluttering and we are going to be on point with our organization!” I swear I lived at the darn container store. The problem is, which I am sure you can relate to if you have been there, is how crazy overwhelming that place is! I was like a kid in a candy store! Everything just looks so great. It was all – “Oh, I can totally use this, yes!” or “I have to have that!” Oh man, not even kidding I spent an embarrassing amount of money in there. But, of course, it got out of hand again. Some of it is AMAZING, but then a lot of it either isn’t practical or maybe I am just using it in the wrong way. I really tried. I got all the labels and cereal/food containers. Somehow, it still looks nothing like Khloe Kardashian’s pantry! ha! At first, it was nice… like, the day I did it all. it is just SO HARD to maintain. This is JUST the pantry. Never mind the whole house.

Before
After

I won’t bore you with the details, but it’s pretty much the same story for the other rooms in our home I tried to organize. But, recently I had to come to terms with the fact that I just didn’t have the time or energy to do it the right way. So, we decided to have a professional come in and help make my organized home dreams come true! Since I’d already purchased half the darn store when I attempted to do this myself… we asked her to try and use the products I already had, to save some money.

Before
After

Getting Started With The Organization Process

Khalil and I agreed that our closet was the number one priority to start on. We desperately needed some help. Neither of us could ever find half our things. This is the one area that we never even came close to getting right, from the time we moved. But then, Carly, at theevergreenmethod.com , made our closet dreams come true! Guys – it is SO GOOD. (Fun fact: Khalil went to college with her brother, but we had never met Carly before.) Immediately when she came to our home to meet us, and take a look at the project I knew I loved her. She was so warm and I felt like she truly got my vision. She even made me a Pinterest board for inspirational ideas of what we had discussed. We decided to start with the master closet, and then move on to other rooms in the house that needed attention.

After
After

Well, she got our closet done in 1 day! AMAZING! I am so in love with it. She knocked it out of the park. I found clothing, jewelry, even shoes I totally forgot about – BONUS! Don’t even get me started on Khalil’s side, ha, oh my gosh like one billion times better. You guys can see the before/after pictures I included. If you are local to the DC area and require some organization in your life, hit her up. She Rocks!

For all of you on the fence about hiring someone, my advice is YES! I am so glad we finally did it and can’t wait for our next project. Stay tuned for more spaces we are decluttering in a future post.

One thing that they both have obsessed with, for forever now, is horses!  But, I wasn’t sure if it was just another phase, like Elsa & unicorns. Because of that, I didn’t want to commit them to take lessons. Well, they have certainly proven without a doubt that this is something they are both passionate about. They seriously pretend to be horses all day long, ha! Instead of a kids' show, they will ask if they can watch horse shows on youtube. It is adorable. (It is also nice that they BOTH seem equally as excited about it)⁣
⁣
So, we finally made the jump and signed them up for riding lessons. It has been so amazing watching them learning to ride and work with the horses. It’s what they look forward to all week. Even the early mornings and long drives don't even seem to bother them at all. I love seeing them care for the horses and show so much love and interest in learning. ⁣
⁣
I am excited to see what the future will bring and if this is something they will do forever! 🐎⁣
⁣
... I've gotta admit that it looks super fun and now even I want to take lessons!! HA⁣

⁣It's time for a Fall Book List! ⁣📚 ⁣ You ⁣It's time for a Fall Book List! ⁣📚
⁣
You guys know I love reading so as we enter into a new season I have been on the hunt to get some new books queued up. Reading has been such a nice distraction from this doom and gloom,  hasn't 2020 been some real crazy town stuff!? ⁣😳
⁣
Seriously...  is this really happening???⁣
⁣
So, my goal is to read as many new books as I can before the new year! 🥂⁣
⁣
But I will start with these five:⁣
⁣
🖤 The Bookish Life of Nina Hill - @abbiwaxman⁣
🖤 The Girl with the Louding Voice - @abidare_author⁣
🖤 The Vanishing Half - @britrbennett⁣
🖤 A Star is Bored -@byronlanedotcom⁣
🖤 Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood - @trevornoah⁣
⁣
These are all-new authors for me and they all have really good reviews so I am super excited to get moving on them! ⁣
⁣
I am going to start with #bornacrime because we already have it. Khalil just finished it and told me it was really good so I am trusting him on this one 🤞⁣

Where were you 6-months ago, before #covid19 turne Where were you 6-months ago, before #covid19 turned our lives upside down? ⛵️⛅️⁣
⁣
@khalil_knows and I were celebrating our 10-year wedding anniversary while sailing the British Virgin Islands with @sail3sisters. At that moment I didn't think it was possible to feel any more grateful for our love, and the life we have built than I did right then. Boy, was I wrong? 6-months into a global pandemic I can say without a doubt... that I am 10x more grateful. ⁣
⁣
I remember when we booked this trip we were thinking like... OMG, it's just going to be the two fo us for a WHOLE WEEK!? Two weeks, alone, on a boat, in paradise... that is what we were worried about. 😂😂😂⁣
Cut to today... almost 6-months of being just the two of us, with the twins, and everyone working from home... let just say we have both had our moments. But, there is no one I would rather be navigating rough seas or this new world with. ⁣
